The Women's Institute (WI) has been empowering women and enriching communities across the UK since its founding in 1915. Originally established to revitalize rural areas and encourage women to contribute to food production during the First World War, the WI has evolved to become the largest voluntary women’s organization in the UK. With over 220,000 members and approximately 6,300 branches nationwide, the WI continues to thrive as a vital part of modern society.
The WI celebrated its centenary in 2015, marking 100 years of inspiring women to make a difference in their own lives and the lives of others. The organization offers a supportive environment where women of all backgrounds can gain educational opportunities, build new skills, and develop lasting friendships. WI members engage in a wide variety of activities, from crafting and cooking to public speaking and organizing community initiatives.
The WI is also a powerful campaigning force. Over the decades, it has championed numerous causes, addressing issues such as health, social welfare, and environmental sustainability. These campaigns reflect the WI's commitment to empowering women to create positive change in their communities and beyond.
