Welcome to Christ Church, Great Lumley

Christ Church in Great Lumley, County Durham, England, is a Victorian-era church built in 1861 and designed by M. Thompson. It is described as a "small unpretentious, well-maintained Victorian church with a Catholic tradition, situated in the centre of the village." Before its construction, residents faced difficulties attending services at the parish church in Chester-le-Street, especially during bad weather or floods, as no bridge spanned the River Wear. Recognising the need for a local church, the Parish of Lumley was created in 1858, with Rev. John Dodd as its first curate. Rev. Dodd initially conducted services in the National School and Sir John Duck's Hospital chapel while raising funds for a new church. The land for the church, known as "Smithy Garth," was donated by the Earl of Scarborough, who also supported fundraising efforts, including hosting events at Lumley Castle. The total construction cost of £1,600 was raised through community contributions. The foundation stone was laid on 24th June 1859 by nine-year-old Viscount Lumley, with a time capsule placed beneath it. The silver trowel used during the ceremony remains preserved in the church.

In the churchyard stands a lychgate, dedicated in 1954 to honor Lumley Parish men who lost their lives in the World Wars. Designed by Hicks and Charlwood, the structure features oak from the Lambton Estate, limestone walls, and a slate roof. Copper plaques commemorate 51 men from World War I and 19 from World War II, serving as a poignant reminder of the village’s sacrifices.

Today, Christ Church continues to serve as a central part of Great Lumley’s community, upholding its historical significance and traditions. Its Victorian charm and rich heritage make it a cherished landmark in the village.
